At a time when South Waikato has faced significant challenges from major business closures and national economic uncertainty, a major new industrial park development is set to deliver a much-needed boost for the economy and community.

Better Eggs chief executive Gareth van der Heyden
Gareth van der Heyden, CEO of Better Eggs, has announced plans to begin work on a new industrial zone in Putaruru, once final consents are received. Designed to attract new businesses and support existing local enterprises, the development is expected to create dozens of construction roles and spark lasting job growth throughout the district.
“South Waikato families have been hit hard by recent manufacturing closures, including the Kinleith mill and Tokoroa ply plant. This new investment signals a turning point – Putaruru is open for business and ready to welcome new industry, innovation, and opportunity,” Gareth said.
The 40-hectare site in South Putaruru is owned by the van der Heyden family. The first sod on the 8-hecare first stage will be turned on Tuesday next week with a formal ceremony which will be attended by Mayor Gary Petley and local iwi Raukawa.
Gareth said it was Better Eggs’ intention to be the first tenant in stage one with a new packing, processing, warehouse and distribution facility.
“The development underscores our region’s advantages: being on the edge of the Golden Triangle, a strong local workforce, affordable land, a supportive council environment, easy access to the Port of Tauranga, SH1 and the main trunk line.”
Waikato Chamber of Commerce CEO Don Good also praised the initiative, saying: “This project brings exactly the kind of positive, forward-thinking investment our region needs. The Chamber has seen first-hand the resilience and adaptability of South Waikato’s business communities, and Gareth’s industrial park shows local leadership stepping up with confidence. New business growth and job creation in Putaruru will benefit the wider Waikato and help set a new course for our district. We congratulate Gareth and everyone involved.”
The Waikato Chamber actively supports South Waikato businesses, with a dedicated staff member and events in Putaruru and Tokoroa that provide advocacy, networking, and business advice to help the local economy thrive.
The development builds on the van der Heyden family’s track record of community support and sustainability leadership, with a commitment to local hiring, infrastructure upgrades, and environmental best practice. The van der Heydens view this as an important opportunity to walk alongside the local community, including Raukawa.
Final consenting requirements are being worked through before earthworks begin by the end of the year.
