Hamilton mother-of-three Amber James discovered her calling for plumbing after a simple home repair.

Working previously at a local meatworks, Amber found the 12-hour shifts increasingly challenging after the birth of her son. Seeking a change, she turned to a practical solution that would change her life.
“My shower had low pressure, so I took it apart and fixed it. That’s when it all clicked—plumbing!” Amber said.
With no prior experience in the industry, Amber made a bold career move and enrolled at Wintec, where she completed a six-month pre-trade course, attending classes three days a week. She loved every minute of it.
After gaining valuable work experience at F.B. Hall & Co., Amber was hired as an apprentice through ATT, part of the IntoWork Group and is now in her fourth year.
“I get a lot of support from ATT. They help with my studies, provide PPE, and are always available when I need advice,” Amber said.

ATT specialises in placing and supporting apprentices in plumbing, drainlaying, gasfitting, and electrical fields across New Zealand. Recent workforce data shows that women make up three per cent of trades roles in New Zealand, marking a positive trend towards a more diverse and inclusive industry.
Amber is proud to be part of this growing movement and sees it as an opportunity to inspire other women.
“Eighty percent of the time, customers are surprised when they see me because I’m a female in the trade, and I think that’s pretty cool,” Amber said.
“It’s really cool when you see another woman in the trade too because you always get on well with them.”

Amber encourages other women considering a career in the trades, “If you just stick to it, stay in a routine, and turn up every day, it’ll pay off, even if it’s challenging to begin with.”
Amber’s sons are proud of their mum and look forward to the day when they can learn from her. Her youngest son even says that when he grows up, he wants to be a plumber.
