For Ana-Maria Richardson her role as a funeral director is all about family.
As a career it requires much compassion, empathy, support, planning, and organisation.
Ana-Maria believes it’s the role of the funeral director to relieve families of much of the load as possible when they are at their most vulnerable.
“Some families like to be hands-on and that is important too, as it helps with the grieving process. Together we can arrange a meaningful and memorable funeral service,” she says.
“All families are unique in that their needs and wishes are different and it’s so important to take the time to listen to grieving families. It is from this sharing that we can create a fitting tribute for their loved one.”
Ana-Maria has a genuine interest in the families she cares for as they come to terms with the loss of a loved one.
“Each and every family becomes like a part of my family as we support them through the journey of farewelling their much-loved family member.”
With over 20 years providing caring and compassionate services as a funeral director, Ana-Maria is passionate about supporting families in their time of need.
“Bereaved families need to feel they can place their trust in you to carry out their wishes and know that their loved one is being taken good care of in a dignified and respectful manner,” she says.
When a loved one dies, even if the death was expected, it is an emotional time.
Families may feel shocked and confused, and not know where to turn or what to do first. The many practical arrangements may seem daunting. Ana-Maria takes the pressure off the grieving family and assures them that she will take good care of their loved one, and help and guide them in planning a fitting farewell for their loved one.
The move to the funeral industry in 1999 was a natural transition for Ana-Maria.
“When I decided to have a change of career, working in the funeral industry appealed as my previous role as a school secretary involved not only helping and caring for the children but their families too. Care and concern for people’s wellbeing was a treasure that I inherited from my mum.”
She approached various funeral homes in the city with her heart set on proving she was an ideal fit for the role of funeral director.
“An opportunity arose in one of the larger funeral homes in Hamilton. You might say the rest is history, but I must say that the professional training I received and the experience I gained there has been invaluable,” she says.
With husband Peter in support, the decision was made to establish her own funeral home in a Spanish Mission style house in Grey Street, Hamilton East in 2019.
With a background in accounting, marketing and management, Peter has been heavily involved in all aspects of the business and in 2021 he joined her as partner in Ana-Maria Funeral Services.
