Sculpture unveiled on Waikato River bank

November saw the unveiling of an impressive, interactive
addition to Hamilton’s sculptures when To¯ia Mai was launched
at Hamilton’s Ferrybank reserve.

Wintec acting chief executive David Christiansen gifted the waka-style sculpture on behalf of the artist Joe Citizen and Wintec to the people of Hamilton/Kirikiriroa.

The event was attended by representatives from the Kīngitanga, Waikato-Tainui, Hamilton City Council, Wintec staff and students, community and industry partners. Tōia Mai means working together, and this was reflected in the guests, many of whom had contributed to the sculpture, including Wintec students.

The sculpture tells the Matariki story and symbolises the cultural, spiritual and economic significance of the Waikato River.
