Waikato Explorer launches catamaran as part of expansion

Waikato Explorer river cruises has made a significant step in expanding its operations with the purchase of a new catamaran.

A new purpose-built shallow-water cruise and charter vessel for the Waikato River will launch in August.

Kiwi Cat is a 12.5 metre catamaran licensed to carry 44 passengers.

Waikato Explorer which has been running cruises since 2012, plans to run its new vessel as a floating café daily from September.

The company’s existing vessel Cynthia Dew will be running return cruises to Mystery Creek on selected days.

Waikato Explorer managing director Darren Mills says, “With fantastic new facilities now in place at Hamilton Gardens and a new pontoon planned for the city, the time is right to grow the business as demand for our cruises is increasing.”

“The new vessel draws only 800 mm so she will be perfect for the sometimes-shallow waters of Waikato.”

“The new vessel is also powered by outboard motors which means less emissions and motors that are a lot quieter as well.”
