Should Hamilton City Council put an unelected Maori representative on each of its standing committees to improve representation?


Hamilton City Council is considering adding an un-elected Maori representative to each of its main standing committees to improve Maori representation within the city. The idea is favoured over creating special Maori wards where only Maori can be elected or a Maori advisory committee which advises the council. Is it a good idea?

Last month’s results: Will New Zealand’s economy get better or worse over the next year?

Waikato Business News readers are pessimistic about the future of the economy – but not overly so. Fifty-one percent predict the economy will decline over the next year but a solid 33 percent are still optimistic it will improve while the rest predict the status quo. Hopefully Sir John Key’s recent warning about a slowdown in the global economy doesn’t come to fruition.
